What does this involve?
HMRC employs approximately 95,000 people and last year we collected over £423 billion in revenue. We have 290 offices throughout the country and around 50 million customerswhere administration staff deal with a variety of tasks such as:
- basic accounts work such as creating invoices and matching payments
- keying in data and customer information
- creating, distributing and filing records
- telephoning or writing to customers (or their agents) to ask for information
- arranging meetings
- producing reports and statistical data.
The work is varied and interesting and you will often work as part of a team providing good customer service.
Civil Service jobs are placed in grades where salaries increase in line with extra responsibility. Our administration grades are:
- Administrative Assistant.
- Assistant Officer.
Most of our administration staff are able to enjoy flexible working hours which means there is not a fixed start and finish time. You can carry out your duties flexibly between the hours of 7:00am and 7:00 pm provided you work your set number of hours each week. You may require approval to work after 5:00pm. This is useful if you have commitments outside work, such as dropping children at school.
We also offer part-time and term-time working, depending on the needs of
the office.
Some of our offices operate early evening shifts which might be suitable
to students or people with other commitments in the day.
What are the career prospects?
Once you have passed your probation, you will be able to apply for posts in a higher grade if you meet the criteria of the post being advertised.
Developmental moves are also available within the department.

What is the pay?
Administrative Assistants start on £12,734. Assistant Officers start at £15,262. (Award pending for both grades).
Your movement up the salary scale each year depends on your performance in the job.
What qualifications or qualities are needed to apply?
When filling these posts, we look for friendly and helpful people who work well with others. We also look for people who are comfortable with figures, well-organised and able to prioritise. As you will be using a personal computer (PC) on a daily basis, you will need to become comfortable with using a PC.

Required Qualifications:
Administrative Assistants:
Two GCSE passes (or equivalent) at A-C in Mathematics and English Language. In Scotland, 2 Ordinary Grades in English and Maths , Grade A to C or equivalent.
Assistant Officers:
Five GCSE passes (or equivalent) at A-C. Two of these must be Mathematics and English Language. In Scotland, 5 Ordinary Grades including English and Maths, Grade A to C or equivalent.
