IHTM18095 - Stocks and shares: valuation: unit trusts

For unit trusts, investment trusts and open-ended investment companies (IHTM34141), the London Stock Exchange listings (IHTM18092) may show two prices. Take the ‘bid price’, which is the lower of the two prices. If there was no price published on the date of death, take the last price published before that date.

Watch out for:

dividends

Newspapers do not show dividends (IHTM18110) due on unit trusts.

If the amounts involved appear likely to be worthwhile, you should ask the taxpayer to provide a fund manager’s letter (or accept similar documentary evidence) to confirm the value of any dividends.

the correct fund name

With unit trusts etc, listed in the Financial Times under the ‘FT Managed Funds Service’ take care to value the right management group. Many companies will be listed more than once because they offer a large variety of investments.
