I worked in retail before where there was a real commercial focus, but as a tax inspector I’m getting an insight into business techniques and practices.

It might take a year to prepare for a big case (I work on several at once), but it is all about making sure businesses pay what they owe and you need to prepare thoroughly.

Working here has its pressures, and there are occasions when you'll need to put in the hours, but having experienced graduate programmes in both the commercial and public sectors, I can say that this one is comprehensive and offers great exposure and experience.

If you don’t know very much about being a tax professional you would expect it to be dull and boring.

During my eight-week internship in International Policy I realised that the organisation is actually quite dynamic and interesting.

The Tax Professional Development Programme offers stimulating work, gives you real experience (for example, how to debate principles with accountants) and is coupled with generous study time during the week.

I really appreciate the flexibility about working hours which means I can work longer hours some days and then leave early on a day when I have violin practice. As an amateur musician needing time off to play, that’s really important to me.
