BA Hons Business Studies

I spent a year doing an industrial placement as a Financial Analyst, joining HMRC in 2003 on the Accountancy Fast Stream programme, sponsored by ACCA.
I found the programme to be very supportive and it helped me to be more focused on achieving my key milestones – which were to do well in HMRC and gain my ACCA qualification. HMRC strive to think about your study requirements and how to support you as an individual. I was able to easily manage my life outside of studying and being able to choose the study methods that suited me was most helpful. Study day allowance is also very favourable compared to the private sector.
My experience has been enjoyably varied, starting with a role as a Finance Analyst, then moving into Internal Audit and then a promotion and move into Financial Accounting as a secondment to the VOA for two years. On qualifying, I moved back to HMRC and a promotion again to DMB Programme. Right now, I’m in Governance and Security, taking responsibility for Programme Finances and maintaining the Finance Business Partner role for the G&S Directorate.
One of my favourite things about HMRC is their positive support for flexible working. I come in early and am usually able to leave at a reasonable time - avoiding the barrage of people during rush hour in central London!
So far, my time at HMRC has been interesting – moving roles every year for the first three years brings its own challenges. I think I was able to adapt easily because there’s such a diverse skill set in the department. It also proved an excellent opportunity for me to learn new skills and use my technical knowledge whilst studying. The department offers a huge variety of jobs and the accountancy scheme allows you to explore areas before deciding on the role that you’re most suited to.
