Policy and professional roles
The wide-ranging, diverse nature of our work means we employ specialist and professionals at all levels. Specialists work in areas such as research, legal and finance, while the complexity, range and responsibility of other work areas requires professional support.
Accountants
Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) qualified, our accountants provide expertise in two key areas:
- compliance - technical accounting issues, potential fraud and commercial accountancy including accounts preparation, record keeping and audit investigation
- Financial Management (FM) - helping the business manage its resources
We choose our accountants through assessment exercises and interview, and recruit graduates annually to our Accountancy Programme.
You’ll find current vacancies here, in the national and local press and accountancy publications.
Economists
Advising ministers and senior administrators on tax change proposals and helping with policy evaluation and research, our economists usually come through the Government Economic Service (GES) before being assigned to us.
Lawyers
Providing technical advice and support on appeals, undertaking civil and criminal litigation and helping with an insolvency practice that’s one of the largest in England and Wales, our London-based lawyers come to us through the Government Legal Service. In Scotland, we recruit direct.
Researchers
Social researchers
Informing and evaluating policy decisions and supporting day-to-day departmental business, our social researchers also advise colleagues on methodological and sampling designs for research and assist in data analysis and presentation.
Generally, social research includes consultation with members from the population of interest, whether in the form of surveys or qualitative studies.
Entry level, research officer posts ask for a good first or higher degree in a social science subject, usually with a significant research methods, social policy or statistics component. Further information is available on the Government Social Research website.
Operational researchers
Also known as ‘management scientists’, these specialists use scientific methods to address management issues.
Their aim is to provide a rational basis for decision making by understanding and structuring complex situations. This often involves building mathematical models to predict system behaviour and assist planning of changes to the system.
We look for candidates with a good first degree or MSc in a numerate discipline. If you’re qualified and interested, you’ll find more information on the Government Operational Research Service website.
Statisticians
Our statisticians create models which provide forecasts to the HM Treasury and inform proposed changes. We recruit statisticians through the Government Statistics Services (GSS) and you’ll find more information on the National Statistics website.
Communications and marketing
Working to enhance and protect the HM Revenue & Customs reputation, our comms and marketing specialists champion customer-focused decision making, and communicate policies, products and services, internally and externally. Posts are advertised directly and via the Government Communications Network.
Information Technology (IT)
It takes over 250 IT systems to deal with the full scope of our work, from direct and indirect tax to National Insurance, tax credits and frontiers work. Occasional vacancies arise for senior level IT specialists and are advertised in the national press, computing publications and on our current vacancies pages.
Intelligence
Essential to investigating cases thoroughly and objectively, our intelligence officers take a proactive role in gathering data to identify and address risk areas, as well as researching sources within the department and beyond, challenging avenues of enquiry and suggesting those that may not have been considered.
Current vacancies are advertised here and in relevant publications.
