This will suit you if you have leadership potential, and want to develop the confidence, skills and qualities needed to manage people and change in a variety of different settings.

Our business is large and complex and it's changing rapidly as we invest in new technology, find better ways of working and different ways to serve our millions of customers. We need managers who are able to motivate people, and deliver improvements in processes and performance.

This element of the Programme is designed to prepare you to take on this role, whether it is in front line operational management, strategy and planning, project delivery, or in any one of our 36 business functions.

Your management skills will be transferable anywhere and not just within HMRC.

How the training works

You will start with a six week core module which includes spending time in your local office, and on a two-week residential course.

After this, you will start studying for your Chartered Management Institute (CMI) accreditation. We will allocate a manager (who will be your direct supervisor), a mentor from within the business (to offer you help and guidance), and a Development Manager, (for specific advice about your career). Between us, we will work out the best programme for you.

We combine formal and on the job training to meet your development needs, as well as the needs of the business. Everyone has slightly different talents so the Programme is tailor made for you. If we get it right, and you put in the effort and initiative, you will advance quickly.

As well as attending Development Centres and external courses, we will arrange a series of jobs in different locations and business areas. Each job usually last between six to twelve months and they are carefully chosen to develop specific senior management capabilities. All the jobs will involve real hands-on management, so you will get early and ongoing responsibility.

We can place you almost anywhere in the business to widen your experience, so flexibility you need to be flexible. You might work in policy development, as a project manager or as a Director’s Personal Assistant.

At the end of the Programme, we would expect you to be employed into a pay band which currently begins at £42,586 (national), £47,735 (London) pay award pending.
