With Britain importing and exporting billions of pounds worth of goods every year, and millions of people travelling through Britain’s ports and airports, not to mention an extensive coastline, someone’s got to keep an eye on all the comings and goings.
While our administration teams and a variety of other specialists deal with the paperwork and processes, our detection staff play a frontline role in preventing and disrupting illegal trade and smuggling. Some of our detection staff will transfer to the interim UK Border Agency over the next 12 to 18 months. Our success is driven by intelligence and ability to respond quickly to risks wherever they arise.
Our team includes:
Working at ports and airports, they act on intelligence to search vehicles and people's belongings, looking for illegal drugs and other prohibited items.
Undertaking searches of cars and baggage, our dogs are trained to detect drugs, money, tobacco and meat. Handlers are responsible for the training and care of their dog.
Our own fleet of boats work closely with police authorities to patrol British waters.
This is all about looking at complex issues such as how to store and handle goods on which duty hasn’t been paid. Most roles in policy require shift work, including evenings and weekends, as ports and airports are open 24 hours.

Most of our people work at key locations including Dover, London, Heathrow, Manchester, Hull, Immingham and Felixstowe. Detection staff are also located at numerous locations nationwide, covering the extensive coastline and airport network.
