Defra DNA Centre of Excellence

The Defra DNA Centre of Excellence (DNA CoE) is a virtual hub bringing together expertise on DNA based tools for monitoring the environment.

The Defra DNA CoE comprises of member organisations that use DNA based tools for monitoring the environment, biodiversity, ecosystem functions and responses to changes within these. The DNA CoE is run by Defra.

Our role

The DNA CoE promotes the understanding, application and development of innovative DNA and genomics approaches and technology to transform environmental monitoring in support of Defra priorities.

The DNA CoE does this through:

  • demonstrating novel and innovative DNA and genomics approaches through a managed portfolio of research and development projects
  • collaborating in Defra, wider government and beyond to leverage expertise, accelerate research and facilitate knowledge transfer
  • building capability through raising awareness understanding of genomics applications through outreach, training, and engagement
