4.2 How to register
To register for PAYE Online for Employers – Internet, go to the HM Revenue & Customs Home Page and then to 'PAYE for employers' from the 'do it online' menu. Or you can go to the Business Link website and select 'Tax and Payroll'.
Select 'Register' from the 'New users' box. Select that you wish to register as an Organisation and the click 'Next'. Choose 'PAYE Online for Employers' and select 'Next'. You will need your PAYE reference number and your Accounts Office reference. Details on where you can find these are on the 'What you will need for registration' screen.
When you select 'Next' you will be taken through five steps to registration. These will be clearly displayed on top of each page as you go through the registration process.
Select 'Next' to begin registration.
Step 1 - Accept terms and conditions
You will then see our terms and conditions. You must accept the terms and conditions to continue with the registration process.
Step 2 - About you
Enter your full name and e-mail address.
The e-mail address is optional. But if you do not give us your e-mail address, we will not be able to send you an e-mail confirmation of any submissions you make, or e-mail you notice of forms we have sent you.
Step 3 - Create Password
You will need to choose a password that you can remember as you will need this every time you log in. Your password cannot include the word 'password'!
Step 4 - Note user ID
This screen will give you a 'User ID'. You must keep a note of this number and use it every time you use our online services. You will receive two letters within seven days of registering. One letter will contain your user ID on a handy card. Keep this safe. The other letter will contain your activation PIN which you will need to 'activate' the service.
Step 5 - Enter details
Enter your Employer PAYE and Accounts Office reference number. (These are on your P30BC paying-in book or your annual electronic reminder.)
You must activate the service within 28 days of the date on the Activation PIN letter or you will need to request a new PIN.
Activate from the HM Revenue & Customs Home Page
by selecting 'PAYE for Employers' from the 'do it online' menu. Enter your
User ID and password.
If it is the first time you have logged on since registration, you will be
asked to put in your Activation PIN. Do not leave registration until the last
minute (for example, just before your online filing deadline). You need to
make sure that you have registered and activated your service in good time
for any deadlines, for example, filing your Employer Annual Return online.
Once you have activated the service you will be sent all notices and reminders over the Internet. If you want to carry on receiving some on paper or by Electronic Data Interchange you must click on 'want to change' from the activation screen. But there are several forms you will still receive online even if you have advised that you wish to receive forms on paper or by EDI. The forms are the P35N and any Employer Annual Return reminders we issue.
