Do you know your employee’s National Insurance Number (NINO)?
It is vital your employees give you their NINO and that you record it correctly. If there is no NINO on End of Year Returns, we cannot correctly record NICs on an employee’s NI record. This could delay the correct payment of benefits including retirement pension.
If your employee can’t remember or can’t find their NINO you can:
- check any documentation you may have for the employee that shows their NINO, for example P45
- you can use the NINO tracing service by completing form CA6855, see details in Employer Helpbook E13, Day-to-day payroll.
If you employee has never had a NINO, you need to:
- keep a record of the employee’s full name, address, date of birth and gender
- tell them to contact Jobcentre plus on Tel 0845 600 0643, or in Northern Ireland their local Social Security or Job Benefits Office. They will need to make an appointment to attend an evidence of identity interview and complete an application form.
For certain types of employment, Jobcentre plus will offer a ‘fastpath’ route for registering the NINO.
