Keeping National Insurance Records up-to-date for Pension Purposes
If you have a Contracted-out occupational pension scheme, please make sure that the details you give to us about the scheme and its members are accurate and up-to-date.
The National Insurance Services to Pensions Industry (NISPI) is responsible for recording this information on to the individual’s National Insurance contribution records. The accuracy of these records depends on the information received from you as the employer. This is important as it affects an individual’s entitlement at State Pension Age.
Always make sure that:
- The correct Employer Contracted-out Number (ECON) is quoted on your P35 Employer Annual Return.
- Form P14, for members of Contracted-out Money Purchase (COMP) schemes, shows Dates of Birth and the Scheme Contracted-out Number (SCON).
- You are deducting the correct rate of National Insurance contribution. For example form P14 should show contribution Table letter ‘D’ for members of Contracted-out Salary Related (COSR) schemes, and contribution Table letter ‘F’ for members of Contracted-out Money Purchase (COMP) schemes. See Chapter 3 of Booklet CWG2 (PDF 707K)
- You send the Contracted-out earnings shown on form P14 to your pension scheme administrator, and tell them when a person’s earnings change.
If you think some National Insurance numbers (NINOs) or Dates of Birth you hold are incorrect, get your pension scheme to contact us on 0845 9 156 805 to find out about the National Insurance number and Date of Birth checking service.
