Q. What equipment will I need to use CIS Online-EDI?
A. The format used when CIS Online-EDI information is exchanged with HM Revenue & Customs is EDIFACT. You will need the following for this format:
- connection to communication software, such as a Value Added Network (VAN) or X.400
- EDI software (enabled for CIS Online)
- Payroll software (enabled for CIS Online).
Q. How soon could an employer start sending forms online once they have Payroll, EDI and Communication software?
A. Very soon. Before this can happen there is a mandatory testing process for the contractor. It involves completing four successful consecutive tests per CIS message type. If Certified software is used, only one successful test is required. Also, there is a consultation process where Inland Revenue representatives can give advice and support.
Q. Where can I get a list of successfully tested EDI and/or Payroll software developers?
A. The EB4 (CIS) EDI Software Developers List includes developers who have passed the Electronic Exchange Certification Scheme. The products shown can exchange online versions of CIS forms and returns in the right way.
Q. Does HM Revenue & Customs have a preferred online communication method?
A. No. However, EDS, on behalf of HM Revenue & Customs, currently deal with:
- Valued Added Network
- X.400
- Odette File Transfer Protocol over ISDN
