Collect details/create password
After confirming that you’ve read the terms and conditions, you'll be asked to provide some personal details and to create your own password.
HMRC recommend that you provide an email address even though this isn't a required field. HMRC can use this if you lose or misplace your User ID or password, as we can send them by email (otherwise HMRC would have to send them through the post, which may cause a delay in you being able to submit your return online).
Your email address will only be used by the Government Gateway to send you confirmation that your online government account has been set up. It is not used to provide you with reminders of when your VAT Returns are due. If you want to set up this email reminder facility you can do it from the ‘At a glance’ page when you have completed the enrolment process.
