Welcome to HMRC's online services demonstrator
This demonstrator shows you how to enrol for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) online services, for example if you want to file returns online. It will also tell you about some of the benefits and key features of our online services.
The demonstrator does not show you how to register your business for business taxes, for example if you are becoming self employed and need to register with HMRC for Self Assessment. For more information on how to tell HMRC about a new business go to www.hmrc.gov.uk/startingup/. The demonstrator assumes that you have already registered with HMRC for the appropriate business tax(es).
We offer a range of online services, all of which aim to be efficient and customer friendly. Our continually developing services let you interact with us quickly, securely and conveniently.
If you are a business customer and would like to set up a Business Tax Dashboard, then you will need to choose the 'Organisation' option on this page.
The Business Tax Dashboard allows you to view details of your business liabilities and payments for up to 3 business taxes in one place. You'll need to have all the online services in your dashboard under one user ID.
The option to set up a dashboard isn't currently available for agents.
You should sign up as an individual if you will be using our online services for personal transactions such as Self Assessment, VAT and Child Benefit.
You should sign up as an organisation if you will be using our online services as a business. For example if you are self employed, a limited company, an employer, or are registered for VAT.
You are an agent if you will be using our online services on behalf of a client, if you are an accountant, payroll bureau or agent.
You are going to find information in the following pages which will include both text and images. Please don't worry if you're unable to read the small print on the pictures as we will use text to draw your attention to important parts of the screen. Some text will appear above the picture and more information can often be found below the picture. You may need to scroll down to view the whole page. Where this is necessary you will see a scroll bar on the right hand side of the screen and you should click on the small arrow at the bottom to move down the screen. At the bottom of the page you will also find Previous and Next Buttons. Click on these to navigate through the pages. About the demonstrator pages includes images to show you how this works. Some of the screens in the demonstrator may be slightly different to the screens on your computer. These are minor differences because we are continually updating and improving our online services. As you work through the online demonstrator, you'll find links to more detailed HM Revenue & Customs guidance. Please bear in mind that following these links may take you out of the demonstrator.
