My shipmates don’t pay NI contributions. Why should I?
Although most people who work have to pay NI contributions, individual circumstances may be different. Each case is taken on its merits. If you are liable to pay Class 1 contributions, those contributions count towards certain benefits and pension rights. These include
- Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit if you have an accident or contract an industrial disease
- Statutory Sick Pay
- Incapacity Benefit if you are too ill to work
- Jobseeker’s Allowance when you are out of work and actively seeking employment
- State Retirement Pension
As well as helping citizens with their enquiries about their tax and
National Insurance, HMRC also actively searches for those who evade payment.
