Learning Together- new compliance checks from 1 April 2009
The way HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) manages compliance checks changed on 1 April 2009 for:
- Income Tax
- Capital Gains Tax
- VAT
- PAYE
- Corporation Tax
- Construction Industry Scheme
The new systems, provided by the Finance Act 2008, introduce a number of key changes, including:
- a single set of powers for HMRC when carrying out checks on these taxes to visit and inspect premises, assets and records and asking taxpayers and third parties for information and documents
- safeguards for HMRC customers
You can find out more about the changes by attending a Learning Together event.
What are Learning Together events?
These are half day events which bring together tax agents and advisers and operational HMRC staff, to learn together in an informal and safe environment.
In just one afternoon, you can gain a technical overview of the changes, explore the practical implications, and network with other tax agents and advisers and operational HMRC staff.
Learning Together events will be of interest to agents who:
- want to know more about compliance checks (including Corporation Tax, Self Assessment and VAT)
- need to understand how penalties are calculated under the new legislation
- want to learn about situations where nil penalties and suspended penalties apply
- would like to discuss compliance changes with other agents and tax officers
- need to develop/maintain skills and knowledge as part of a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) plan
Learning Together is supported by the leading tax institutes and associations, including ICAEW, ICAS, ACCA, CIOT, AAT and ATT - but all practicing tax agents are welcome to attend, regardless of professional affiliation.
Learning Together will take place between October-November 2009 and February-March 2010. There is no charge for attending. All events start at 1.30pm with registration and a complimentary buffet luncheon from 12.30pm.
